Dying WomenLithography, 2007
One of the many social issues that I care deeply about is violence against women. Women all around the world are still oppressed through violence and fear; every day women are faced with violence such as rape, assault, mutilation, and even murder. Just to name a few, in parts of the world young girls face mutilations like female genital mutilation and breast ironing. Even in developed countries like the United States Murder is the number one cause of death for pregnant women. Women in the world are physically, emotionally, and mentally dying from all forms or violence. I've decided to use the women symbol in the print instead drawing a figure. The female symbol is universal and it doesn't have a face, because violence against women is prevalence in all part of the world.
Malaquias Montoya and Sue Cole are two artists thatI would say have influence how I think about making prints. Cole's artwork are really intense and with my last litho print, I 've tried to work towards that uneasy feeling. I am really drawn Montoya's believe about art being the vioce for the vioceless. I think that we should use our talents, regardless of what it is, to be a voice for those that are voiceless.
